Job Description

The Director of Category Development Walmart & Sam’s Club performs a valuable role in building a strong partnership with Walmart & Sam’s Club retailers by developing and implementing specific category and shopper solutions and programs to deliver against category and customer priorities.  This position is responsible for leading the development and sharing of Category Management foundations, directives, and insights throughout the organization for the assigned categories.  This role will translate analytical and consumer/shopper insights into action the help drive strategic and tactical initiatives to achieve category growth goals.

  • Lead the Category Management team to successfully support the sales team and achieve company goals through the preparation of data, insights and analytics and category solutions to drive both customer and NBCo. goals and objectives.   
  • Develop, train and coach team of one to support the Walmart & Sam’s Club brick & mortar and ecommerce businesses.
  • Responsible for managing and leading key thought leadership initiatives at Walmart & Sam’s Club
  • Set Category Strategy for Walmart & Sam’s Club in collaboration with Walmart/Sam’s Club VP, Sales Team and Category Management Team by driving and implementing thought leadership at these key accounts
  • Establish clear Category Management directives for NBCo. based on Industry Macro Trends, Consumer and Shopper Insights by collaborating with various third party data sources and constructing dynamic presentations around key consumer trends that are driving the category dynamics.
  • This individual will be our expert for accessing internal knowledge and translating it into action to identify opportunities in the assigned retailer and facilitating solution development with the account team and other team members.
  • Strong collaboration with cross functional partners (Insights, Sales Team, Category Development Team, Shopper Activation Team to leverage syndicated data and category & shopper insights to drive category initiatives.
  • Individual will work closely with Sr. Director Shopper Strategy & Category Management as well as Director of Shopper Insights to drive Walmart shopper research to identify key insights that result in actionable solutions for the retailer.
  • Develop modular, ad hoc, category reviews and business planning analysis to develop category and brand recommendations across the 4Ps including shelving guidelines/best practices – Establish and deliver best-in-class merchandising recommendations.
  • Influence the customer by identifying specific opportunities and solutions within the retailer
  • Assist with any research and lead projects to deliver category solutions benefitting both the customer and the category
  • Analytical foundations – Develop standardized category review templates for Category Development team to populate and deliver to accounts.
  • Management of data tools – Optimization of category management tools – assortment and space management
  • SKU rationalization/projection methodology – Develop and employ standardized processes for SKU rationalization and new item projections.
  • Share key learnings and data insights/trends at key retailer(s) with Category Development Team to influence rest of market.
  • Manages competing priorities under demanding time constraints.
  • Develop and maintain strong business relationships with key customer contacts and Sales Teams.
  • Strong analytical interpretation and data utilizing key tools such as Retail Link, POS, Advanced Consumer Data (Market Research, Consumer Decision Tree, Household Panel Data, Nielsen Data Retrieval/Analysis)

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate's qualifications 

  • 12 + Years of Consumer Packaged Goods with 8+ years in Category Management, preferably FMCG.
  • Strong prior experience working with IRI/Nielsen syndicated and panel data required
  • Experience working alongside national retailers and building successful partnerships
  • Prior experience working directly with account teams a must
  • This person must work well in a team environment and have a demonstrated ability to operate at all levels within an organization.
  • Proven success at business building (strategy development, category solutions leadership).
  • Microsoft Office (very strong Excel/PowerPoint), IRI, Customer and Syndicated Data. 
  • Ability to build relationships and senior level engagement
  • High level of organizational skills, good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to multi-task and follow-up when responses are needed
  • The ability to utilize creativity and push beyond the obvious, comfortable going into “unchartered” territory in setting out recommendations, goals
  • Problem solver with a solutions oriented mindset
  • Dynamic leader who can push past obstacles, overcome objections
  • Understand the value of listening to customers, gaining insights and moving objectives forward
  • Must be an articulate communicator who can quickly synthesize data
  • P&L management and strong financial acumen
  • Bachelor's degree required and master’s preferred.
