The Director of Technical Services leads the Technical Services Managers, Scientists, and Analysts at our New York manufacturing sites. The Director coaches and provides leadership to the Technical Services team, with responsibilities for improving current products and processes, improving efficiencies, addressing manufacturing issues, seeking cost savings and maintaining networks of external partners.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works directly with the VP, Technical Services, to recommend and implement organizational projects and procedural changes to deliver on bottom-line savings and top-line business growth.
  • Identifies and leads productivity improvement, cost savings and technical transfer projects, tracks key performance indicators, and reports results to upper management.
  • Directs teams to analyze root causes of problematic formulas or processes and supervises corrective/preventive actions.
  • Serves as technical expert in manufacturing and packaging processes.
  • Co-leads strategies to develop new process and organizational capabilities.
  • Brings best practices to form and direct cross-functional teams to build accountability for results.
  • Contributes to formation of ways of working with third-party manufacturers on productivity initiatives and acts as the technical liaison as needed.
  • Provides resources to respond to day-to-day technical needs of the manufacturing organization.
  • Recognizes the need for constant evaluation and improvements to new and existing work procedures.
  • Leads effort in simplifying, optimizing and/or qualifying product formulations and processes. 
  • Recommends and implements improved tools, processes and procedures to add value to the company.
  • Assesses competencies, strengths, and developmental needs of the Technical Services colleagues.
  • Maintains a proficiency in technical knowledge/skills and is current with developments and trends in their area of expertise.
  • Builds teamwork across the organization; Collaborates effectively with academic institutions, SMEs and other technology providers.
  • Displays intellectual curiosity, challenges the status quo, and looks beyond established practices to develop unique solutions that  add value to the company.
  • Hires and trains the Technical staff.
     

Job Requirements

  • 10+ years of technical experience in a consumer (food, dietary supplement or OTC) environment involved in manufacturing of two-piece capsules and tablets, including 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading productivity projects, qualification trials, and technical transfers in manufacturing required.
  • Packaging experience preferred.
  • Experienced in lean sigma tools to effectively lead cross-functional projects and solve complex technical issues.
  • Effective in leading teams through changes and transitions.
  • Knowledgeable of cGMP and supplement regulatory guidelines.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Science, or equivalent required, advanced degree preferred. Lean Six Sigma Black belt certification also preferred.
  • Working knowledge of tablet presses, encapsulation machines, granulation, blending equipment. Hands-on experience conducting process and product qualification trials. Desired: Knowledge of packaging equipment.
  • Ability to lead, train, motivate, and work within cross-functional teams.
  • Detail oriented, ability to maintain effectiveness during major changes in work tasks or the work environment; adjusting quickly to new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures.
  • Continuously looks for ways to do things faster and better, while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Proven technical leadership skills with experience using Lean Sigma .principles to develop or improve products and/or validate processes.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate highly technical individuals and teams.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to follow up and foster a team approach to achieving project goals. 
  • Good project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with external partners and scientific experts.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and customized computer applications given appropriate training. 
  • Knowledge of financial aspects of a business.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15%.
