Job Description

Under the direction of the Microbiology Manager, the Microbiologist (I) is responsible for performing routine laboratory procedures in the quality control microbiology laboratory.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs routine testing of samples according to established compendial and in-house procedures.  
  • Prepares solutions, suspensions and media to perform essential laboratory procedures.
  • Performs clerical and administrative duties using established systems to gather information needed to define test requirements and communicate results to laboratory customers.
  • Makes and records observations, performs calculations, collects and may assist in preparing data for evaluation, keeping supervisor informed of work status.
  • Communicates/maintains equipment and supply needs required to avoid delays in testing.
  • Reports results of assignments and maintains and performs related record keeping in compliance with approved regulatory policies and standards to meet quality and accuracy requirements.
  • Follows and complies with all appropriate operations and testing procedures, GMPs and safety and health requirements as applicable.
  • Demonstrates good housekeeping practices to minimize data mix ups, potential laboratory contamination and safety hazards. Understanding and handling of bio-hazardous materials and waste using proper and safe techniques.
  • Escalates results of any unexpected or out-of-specification results so that appropriate investigation may be initiated and documented.
  • As required participates (under general supervision) in conducting investigational studies of atypical results.
  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on the instrumentation and/or procedures in the lab.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences or other closely related discipline
  • Relevant experience can be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient analytical skills
  • General computer skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Exhibit positive attitude regarding work and responsibilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively within teams
  • Ability to maintain effectiveness during major changes in work tasks or the work environment; adjusting effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures

  • Ability to prioritize workload to meet schedule timelines.  Some weekend and holiday work required as needed to meet product release priorities.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lifting equipment and supplies (30 lbs), dexterity required to handle samples, repetitive motion, vision abilities and demands related to details microscope work
