Job Description  

The Nature's Bounty Co.'s Product Development Team is recruiting for a Product Development Scientist, responsible for driving technical projects and activities across our branded Vitamin portfolio. The Scientist will  manage and participate in the development of new products including design and technology transfer of new formulas, processes, products, line extensions, and technical support to core products.  This position contributes to the successful execution of new product development activities inclusive of Stage Gate and core Product Development activities to support the growth of current and future Nature’s Bounty Co. brands and platforms for international and domestic markets.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, manage and complete technical projects and activities necessary to design, develop and optimize new and improved formulations/products/delivery systems for Nature’s Bounty Co. VMHS products that meet customer needs
  • Creatively links formulation and/or product science and technology opportunities to the needs of the business through development and transfer of new products from Idea to Commercialization, transfers technologies from bench/pilot to manufacturing scale and successfully implements proprietary and differentiated technical solutions
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, draw conclusions and make recommendations from data to enable technical execution of projects. Modify methodologies to improve the quality, accuracy and usefulness of data. Provide technical recommendations to Project and Brand teams through clear and concise oral and written communications 
  • Participates in writing Master Batch Records (MBR’s) for internal manufacture, raw material specifications and other manufacturing documents needed for feasibility, development and manufacturing activities in both internal and external facilities
  • Partners closely with technical staff as needed external contract research, development and manufacturing sites to successfully advance projects 
  • Participates in the development, documentation and transfer of critical ingredient, product, and process parameters/specifications to internal and external Manufacturing and Quality Assurance functions to ensure consumer focused and robust design of new products, processes and characterizing methods. Ensure that proper documentation for all technical and project work is completed
  • Design, conduct and document stability testing protocols to support product development efforts in order to recommend and support product dating
  • Engage in pre-formulation, formulation and formulation enhancement activities including bench, pilot and production scale trials at internal and external development and manufacturing sites
  • Prepare cost quotes for new products targeting proposed claims and product benefits.
  • Interacts with multifunctional teams (including Quality, Procurement, Product Development and Manufacturing) to resolve issues as may arise in the course of new product development
  • Performs comprehensive, sophisticated and critical evaluation of own data
  • Explores and shares new scientific information, technologies, products and processes with the Science and Technology community.  Builds awareness of developments outside of The Nature's Bounty Co. through attendance at trade associations or scientific meetings 
  • Maintains external collaborations with suppliers, academia and other professional bodies


  • 3+ years industrial hands-on experience in the dietary supplement, consumer healthcare and/or value-added consumer packaged goods industry.  Emphasis on solid dose formulation.  Softgel experience is a plus 
  • BS, MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent with relevant industry experience considered
  • Demonstrated expertise in partnering with external suppliers and contract developers and manufacturers
  • Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices and working knowledge of form-specific regulatory requirements (DSHEA, FDA) and certifications (non-GMO, Kosher, Halal, DSVP, etc.)
  • Specific experience in solid dose (capsule, tablet, chewable tablet) formulation is required, Softgel expertise desired
  • Proven track record of successful delivery of technical projects in a value-added consumer packaged goods environment preferred with emphasis on solid dose
  • Strong formulation expertise and understanding of ingredient/raw material physical and chemical interactions
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple, concurrent projects

  • Working knowledge of the principles and operation of equipment commonly used in solid dose manufacture (tablet presses, capsule fillers, coating equipment, blenders, granulation and milling equipment) as well as the understanding of the manufacturing unit operations associated with each equipment type
  • Proficient basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc) as well as a working knowledge of various statistical program applications and SPC  
  • High degree of organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in NPD/Stage Gate process from idea through commercialization
  • Ability to partner with external suppliers and contract developers and manufacturers as needed
